- Custom Foot OrthoticsFoot orthotics are devices made to address biomechanical or physiological problems. They can be used to treat conditions in the feet such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia or arthritis. They are also used in helping conditions of the knee, hip as well as the back. The most important aspect when considering treatment with orthotics is the examination process and knowing if a foot orthotic is an appropriate treatment choice for your condition. OKAPED custom made Orthotics are made specifically for the patient following an assessment by one of our Canadian Certified Pedorthists. In order to evaluate individual unique requirements, we perform a gait (walking or running) analysis as well as a hands-on biomechanical assessment of the feet and lower legs. The Pedorthist then takes a three-dimensional casting or scans the patient’s foot and the custom orthotic is made from raw materials. (only a trained person should be taking your cast or making a scan of your foot). Insurance Coverage Certified Pedorthists are one of the professionals certified to provide Custom Foot orthotics in Canada. - Non Custom Arch SupportsArch supports fit by foot size can be helpful for a variety of foot related conditions. Some off the shelf insoles are designed to mold to your foot’s shape and provide and increased level of support over the stock insole that is supplied with footwear. Other types are supportive and “best fit” meaning that if you fit the makers mold, they have a better chance of helping you. OKAPED stocks a variety of non-custom arch supports because many conditions we treat and support only require this basic help. These supports are very different from truly custom orthotics that are designed from 3 dimensional models of your feet. Custom Orthotics help to provide specific pressure relief, alignment correction and wound care offloading when required for conditions that are causing pain or discomfort. We don’t use step on sensor machines. These are really just “marketing light shows”. There simply is no evidence they work better than the regular non-custom arch supports available. Most of these machines measure pressure which does not provide height or shape measurements. They really just guess at your arch height and arch support required. - Ligament Knee BracesLigament Knee braces are designed to help protect unstable knees through a wide range of activities. These braces generally have supportive hinges as well as reinforced shells or compression sleeves. Ligament braces can be custom made or measured and fit by size. Most of the non-custom braces we have selected to fit can even be modified to fit you better before you leave the clinic. If your knee alignment or injury dictate that a full custom ligament brace be utilized, OKAPED’s clinical staff can guide you through the section process and scan, mold or measure your knee to have a brace fabricated just for you! - OA Unloader Knee BracesFor treatment of a knees with arthritis related pain, Unloader knee braces can often keep you active by reducing pressure to the affected, painful region of you knee. At OKAPED a clinician will spend time with you evaluating your knee alignment, shape, and movement patterns including your gait to help select the most appropriate bracing product for your OA condition. Weight bearing x-rays of the knee joint are common diagnostic tools your physician may send you along with as they illustrate the compartment(s) of the knee affected by osteoarthritis. Many braces in this category are non-custom and patient ready. We can try these on with you at the clinic so you can experience the fit and function of a brace on your knee. If your specific knee alignment is not accommodated with a pre-made brace custom versions are available though our brace manufacturing partners. - Patella Knee BracesKnee Braces for Patella (kneecap) support are designed to provide assistance with the alignment of the patella. Some braces also offer advanced assistance in reduction in swelling around the patellofemoral region. Generally these braces are “pull on” styles made of varying materials such a neoprene – spandex – knitted fabrics. The fit between brands and their functional support varies so having one of our staff members help you to try on a brace and select which is best for your knee injury or pain is essential.
- Post Surgical & RehabThe New innovation in ligament healing knee braces are the Ossur ACL and PCL Rebound braces. They help control the position of the knee during ligament healing to help reduce any strain on the target ligament. Rebound ACL or PCL knee braces require an appointment. Post Surgical braces are designed to stabilize the knee while offering range of motion restrictions pre or post surgery. They are telescopic and universal size and side.
